This room addition in Memphis was a project that we really enjoyed working on. This classic home in the heart of Midtown was built in 1910. It had a carriage house in the back with a servants quarters upstairs. The building was in disrepair, but the homeowner wanted to keep the carriage house and make it usable. They decided to use the space for a home office. Nu-prime worked with the customer to come up with a unique updated design. Nu-prime strengthened the original construction and added several custom features to update the building. Basically, the downstairs portion of the building was redesigned as a garage, and the upstairs was turned into a combination home office / man cave. The original ceiling needed repair so we customized it to have exposed wood with a light finish wood showing. Instead of using standard cross beams, we reinforced it with visible metal rods. This really opens up the space and puts a unique twist on a classic building.

Our design team worked with the customer, who had picked up some vintage items that they wanted included in their new home office. One of these features included vintage office door that leads to a new custom half bath. We also added a custom bar with a working sink and floating glass shelves. To help give a modern look to the space, we added built-in 30 year long life LED bulbs behind the glass shelving to make them really stand out. The bar and the bathroom both feature custom tile work and brand new light fixtures that were chosen by the customer.

Custom hardwood flooring was also installed – it was actually upcycled hardwood from a historic building. It was refinished and installed in the upstairs of the carriage house. We also preserved details of the original building wherever possible.  The end result is a classic building that the homeowner can now use to both work and relax in. It blends with the original construction from the outside. On the inside, it combines both modern and vintage features to reflect the history of the home and the homeowner’s personal style.
